Castaway Island--Linda

Postby lindawing » October 23rd, 2014, 9:35 am

OMG! This is quite some map! Having watched the first part of Blindman's 1st Episode in his LP for this map, I knew a little bit about how it begins.

I chose to loot more of the (about-to-wreck) airplane than he did, and evidently I picked up something that had part of the elaborate redstone circuitry attached, because the plane didn't blow up. So I just went into Creative Mode and looted all the stuff left up there in the sky, for later use! :uhhuh:

I went through and typed up all the challenges I've found so far (not all of them are in the special rooms right after you get out of the ocean. There are a few typos in the .rtf file I'm going to upload here, but you'll be able to figure out what I mean, I'm sure. I'm too tired to edit it. NOTE, NEXT DAY...I've redone it and added in the quests that I forgot to type into it, as well. You can find it HERE.

Here are two more photos.

This map could take FOREVER to do. I'm thankful that the designer has given many options. :uhhuh:

Wow! This map looks incredible. :yeah:

I did some research and found some free video recording software. It's called LoiLo Game Recorder. I've tried it out and it does an awesome job recording and is very easy to use. I also found free movie maker software, Windows Movie Maker.

I'm going to give it a try with this map. We'll see what happens! :rotfl:

I've also been tempted to try it with the Brick Mansion Challenge. ;-)

Oh, that would be so cool if you tried it with the challenge! I have Windows Movie Maker. I used it (along with a different piece of software) to make Mom's memorial video. I've used it many times before. It might be OK for editing a game video, but not for making it in the first place.

I'm going to check out the LoiLo Game Recorder to see how it works. Thanks!

Regarding the map...I'm not sure if I'm going to love it or hate it! I already know that there are a couple of things that don't work right in 1.8. For one thing, Mojang switched the way the sun rises and sets. It now rises in the east and sets in the west...as on Earth. It USED to rise in the south and set in the north, and he makes use of that for several clues. So for the first hint, in the hint room, where you're supposed to look out into the sea, to the south, to see the "awesome sunrise," there's nothing you can see at sunrise, because the sun is rising to your left instead of in front of you.

So I just went into Creative (again, already), and flew out to the way the sun WOULD have been rising, and sure enough, I found one of the places mentioned in the hints, that is NOT on the big map on the floor down there in the challenge rooms. There is SO much stuff in that place (the discovered place), and SO many nooks and crannies, you could just play THERE for a month or more, and then there's still the rest of the place. I think he kind of went overboard with this. It's gorgeous, though! :uhhuh:

I started the Brick Mansion Challenge over and recorded the first episode of my gameplay using the LoiLo Game Recorder. It worked great! One of the problems I ran into was the frame rate blinking, but that was fixed by running The Sims 4 in windowed fullscreen mode. After I was done, I edited the video in Windows Movie Maker. After I saved it, the file size went down from 2.98 GB to 928 MB. I will upload it and share with you all in my thread after we get home later. Ethan has a dance at school and Lucas has a play.

Castaway Island sounds like a wonderful place to explore! I would like to start playing it some time this weekend. :yeah:

I just PMed you about that! That's a HUGE video file, and you won't be able to upload it anywhere, more than likely! YouTube only allows you 100 MB or 15 min., regularly, but they will give you permission for larger files, but only up to 228 MB or 40 hours.

https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/71673?hl=en

When you mentioned the size in the chat, I thought you meant that it was only 928 KB, not MB! Yikes! I'm careful not to download anything more than 75 MB most of the time, and I stay away from anything approaching a GB. I just can't do it. That's 1/20th of our 30-day limit, and we have too many other things that HAVE to be downloaded each month. I'm sorry! :-(

I started Castaway over again today, and did it right, so that the plane blew up. I still looted a lot of stuff beforehand, though. :uhhuh:

I took some pictures while exploring the reef and one beach of Castaway Island during the first night.

While looking out over the "fallen" wing of the plane, I saw this:

Turns out it has nothing to do with the map...it's one of the new sea monuments!

Looking out from the beach, though, there is definitely something out there to look into:

Also, out on the beach, I found THIS looking down at me, as I chopped out the last piece of the trunk of one of the constructed palm trees (the leaves give oak saplings, by the way).

I also corrected the challenges document I made, and added the quests, as well.

I was able to upload the video with no problems. I will post a link in my thread. I'll see if I can condense it down to a smaller size so you can watch it too. I'm still very much a noob at this, so I'm sure there's lots more to learn about making these videos. I'll let you know how it goes!

Thank you for the new challenges list. I have downloaded it and will print out a copy. I like your new start! I still haven't explored one of the ocean monuments. :yikes:

I decided early on, to make my little beginning shelter out on the reef. Here it is, now, lit with the glowstone that I "borrowed" out of the challenge halls, which have SO much glowstone that I could take out twice what I already did (and more), and still leave PLENTY of light in there! :uhhuh:

I have also added my storage cellar, now, and my farm is up and running. I haven't gotten any pumpkins yet, but have one planted. The melons are growing like crazy, and I got the seeds for the wheat over on Castaway Island, around toward the rear of it. I still don't have either a potato or a carrot, but I'm sure the Zombies will drop both, very soon! :uhhuh:

I've done the SOS beacon. I couldn't just light it up like I did for Frost Breath, because in this tropical environment, the wood just burns up really fast. I tried just putting the fire onto sandstone blocks, and that was working just fine, until...it began raining like crazy, and the fires went out! I didn't know that would happen, actually! So...I settled for torches. I could have checked into how to make an actual Minecraft beacon, but I think it would have had to wait for a trip to the nether, if I'm recalling correctly, so...it just says "some sort of SOS beacon," so there you go. ;-)

More pictures. I've been to the Lava Caverns, now, and have gotten the buried diamond armor. :joy:

The Revealed Ravine on the main island is now all uncovered of sand...that was very startling!!! I'm glad I wasn't standing on the sand when it started falling...I was up one of the crafted trees!!!

As it turns out, the Lava Caverns connect back over to that ravine, also, so I've been in and out of there, and all around there. It would have taken days, so I just went into Creative and fought the monsters that turned up as they appeared (there weren't a huge amount of them...no extra spawners or anything, and got it pretty much all lit up, and just counted up the precious ores, etc., and didn't bother about the cobble, dirt, and sand. I have plenty of those, everywhere, anyway. :uhhuh:

I did the work of putting out the lava falls, though I did fly around, and I just used glowstone everywhere, to make it easier. I know there's a TON of the stuff in the elite cave, which is SO awesome! When I get over there, I'll just throw away a couple of stacks of it and still have enough for 10 other players, at least! :wow:

I've made my full set of iron armor, weapons, & tools. I got my bow and arrows from the skeletons down in the caves. I could have crafted more, but I figure it was more work to collect them, than to craft them. :uhhuh: I forgot to get a picture of the bow and arrows, but I'm not going back in, now...too tired.

Getting that cactus island all planted must have been LOADS of fun! I don't think they can hurt you in creative, but I'm not sure!

I've decided against proceeding any further with this map. It's just way too much over the top, as far as spread out quests and challenges are concerned, and the directions are too vague and don't add up right in some cases--partly due to 1.8 vs. 1.7.2 when he made it, but also partly due to to what I can only think was his indecision at some point, and how he changed a challenge here or there, then left conflicting signs out on the map.

I know that the other day, I found the Moolands, and they were straightforward and I got my milk and cookies, and I went home. Today, I followed a cave down through Cactus Island, and there was a sign that said, "Welcome to the Milk & Cookies Cave."

Well...there are a TON of connected caves down there (that probably connect back to all the others I've been in, so far, but I went and went and went and went, and killed monsters, and picked up assets, but...no moolands where the milk and cookies are. Like I said--I think he probably changed his mind at some point, and forgot that that sign was down there.

Basically, the map is just way too large to be an adventure or challenge map, with too many islands and too many things to investigate. If I wanted to play that way, I'd just make a new map.

When you DO find his stuff, again, it's just so over the top! Like with the glowstone. My word! I could probably make furniture in my own house out of it, there's so much of it, and there's really no reason for it...it's just extraneous.

So...anyway...it has quickly grown tedious to me. If you try it, let me know what you think!
