Building a Castle with Turrets and a Root Cellar

Patty and I have been discussing making a medieval TS2 neighborhood. She shared a castle with me that she had downloaded, and after checking it out, I said that I would like to have a root cellar under the turret that is off the corner of the kitchen. She asked how that could be done, so I built an example, on a 5x5 lot. She wanted to make it on the 5x6 lot, and asked for help to make the root cellar, so we did that, step-by-step, by making a topic and going back and forth between that and the chat panel.

After she got the hang of it, I decided to delete that topic and make this one, here, with some better pictures and explanations than we went through in our little impromptu lesson. So here we go. Patty--as you'll see, I used a slightly different method of setting the basement floor--quite a bit easier than what I ran you through earlier tonight.

Patty wanted enough room outside the castle for some landscaping. So we started our four foundation turrets 8 squares in from the edges, beginning with the one at the left of the entry area (at the front, left corner of the lot). Here's the process from there. NOTE: You'll need to download and install Marvine's Animated Ladders to make this small cellar work optimally. The regular stairs really take up too much room, though they WILL work.

Though the turrets will end up octagonal, you first need to make them square (this is the easiest way). Using the regular foundation tool, make a 10x10 square, so that when you're done, the basement/root cellar area will be big enough for some shelving and storage solutions.

Cut off the corners using the diagonal foundation tool and CTRL. Your angled walls should be three squares long, and your straight walls should be four squares long.

Cut out the center to form a foundation doughnut, making sure that you have a two-square border all the way around.

Using any set of connecting stairs, go down to the ground level inside the doughnut, and sink three stairs consecutively, in a U shape.

Remove the stairs.

Starting at the lowest piece of ground, using the leveling tool, level out the inside of the basement. Be sure to not go too far out, at the corners, or you'll have to relevel the ground up at the regular ground level.

Add a floor above the foundation.

Add a floor inside the basement, and around the ring, as well. If you add the floor to a flat space inside the ring, you'll be less likely to have the level disturbed outside the ring. If it gets out of whack, use UNDO, then carefully try again. The land should NOT shift when you add the flooring. You can skip the flooring in the ring if you want, but it just gives the basement a more finished look.

Add two ladders (or just one, if you prefer), or add stairs if you don't want to use the CC ladders.

The ladders will punch one hole each in the foundation floor. Stairs will, of course, punch more. If you use the ladders, you'll need to punch two more holes to make a square. Sims can go down the ladders without making the hole bigger, but the railings will not cross at the one-square line. They need one more space.

Add the railings (fences or half walls).

Here, I've added walls to make the turret enclosed (which will eventually get a door out of the kitchen into the turret), and candle chandeliers above and below the foundation. I also painted a brick pattern onto all the walls, that compliments the brick flooring I used. This area will be my castle's pantry, with the ladders going down into the root cellar.

Since we only wanted one root cellar, the other three turret foundations don't need all that work...just the octagonal foundation with a floor and walls painted on.

You could get by with a 9x9 octagon for the turrets, which would save some space in the completed castle size. You could also have more turrets, or maybe just have two, or create them however you want your castle's shape to be. I was thinking I might add a square one in the middle, with the other rooms plotted around that. Hmmm...
