Breaking Up and Re-Relating Large Families in TS4

Postby lindawing » June 20th, 2015, 3:19 am

Recently, Patty created her whole family as they were when they were young. Then she aged everyone up and created spouses and kids, so that there are now three generations of Lambs. The problem with that, was that though she could keep them related in her own game, if she shared them, whoever downloaded them would have to get them related to each other all over again.

I told her I'd write a tutorial about the process. I'm using the Lamb Family as my helpers.

To begin with, Patty uploaded the young family here:

Then she uploaded three different files for the aged-up family as follows:

I downloaded the A, B, & C files, and then I began putting them back together, yet keeping them on different lots, as I'll show below.

To get everyone related and then re-arranged on their empty lots, I needed to end up with four Lamb lots, total. I started with all empty lots. Patty has made a house for Bryan, Patty, & Shaun to live in (but they--and Angel--went on an empty lot for now). I needed to move BJ and his wife and son; Kathy and her two children; and Angel, to three separate empty lots. Patty will provide those three residences soon.

Here are the four empty lots I chose, in one of my saves, in Willow Creek.

I used three of Melody's Four Corners Sims to temporarily populate the three empty lots where the first part of the Lamb Family are NOT living.

The reason for using a single Sim on each of the three extra lots, is because when you use Household Management to split families up, you can't move them to an empty lot. You can only move them to a lot where you've already placed a Sim. You CAN place Sims on empty lots when you are using your Library. So placing helper Sims for this purpose, if you just place those Sims before you start messing around with the family you want to put together and re-split, it makes things much easier.

Once those Sims were placed and waiting for their new roommates, I moved BJ and his family (from my Library) in with Bryan, Patty, Angel, and Shaun. I then clicked on the lot and chose to PLAY that part of the family.

Then I used these two cheats:

testingcheats true
cas.fulleditmode

Once those cheats were input, I shift-clicked on Bryan and took all seven Sims into CaS to edit their relationships.

RT-10.png

In order to change those, I used the "Edit Relationships" tool to begin changing the new "roommates" to family members. The only exception to this, is that you can't change the in-laws. The spouses will remain roommates in that panel, though the children will become grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and/or cousins, depending on their situation.

Here's how the relationship panel looked when I began...

Here's how it looked after I finished Bryan's edited relationships...

Then I edited Patty's relationships...

Then I began checking the other relationships, just to make sure everything was right. Because Angel, Shaun, and BJ were then related to both Patty and Bryan, the relationships were correct.

After making sure that all the relationships for the first two parts of the family were correct, I then used the PLAY button at the bottom right of the CaS page, and took the family home again. Then I SAVED the world at that point.

After getting those relationships accomplished, I needed to move BJ and his family to one of the temporarily-occupied lots that I had waiting. To do that, I had to leave the lot and "Manage Worlds."

Then, going into Household Management, I chose the double-arrow button to split the family. I selected the Lamb Family in PLAYED FAMILIES, then I went to the UNPLAYED FAMILIES and selected (from Willow Creek), the Foss family. Then I selected BJ, Jonna, and Bruce from the Lamb Family, and Sharon Foss on the other side.

Once I clicked the right-facing arrow in the middle, I got this result.

RT-20.png
RT-20.png (142.61 KiB) Viewed 745 times

After accepting that choice, there were two PLAYED families: Lambs and Foss.

RT-21.png

I clicked on the Foss family, changed the family name to Lamb, then clicked on the pencil at the bottom, then started to click the pencil at the bottom to take the family into CaS again, but suddenly remembered that that wouldn't work, because I needed to again use the "testingcheats true" and the "cas.fulleditmode" cheats again.

RT-22.png

So instead, I closed out the Household Management panel and went to to the world, where I opened the NEW Lamb family to PLAY them. Once in there, I used the cheats, then took them into CaS, where I chose to DELETE Sharon Foss.

Once Sharon waved goodbye and left the family, I clicked the PLAY (check-mark) button at the bottom right, and the BJ Lamb family was established on their very own empty lot.

Once the relationships were proved, I went back to Manage Worlds and saved the world again.

Then it was time to move Angel out to HER own place. To do that, I simply repeated the above process using the Tchotchke household.

Notice that Angel's family tree doesn't show her nephew Bruce. That's OK...the game doesn't extend to that for this level in the tree. At the end, I'll show you Bryan's family tree. It will prove out the entire relationship scheme.

After proving this part of the tree, I went back to Manage Worlds and then saved again.

Getting Kathy and her children related to everyone involved moving them from the Library into the Bryan Lamb family, just as I had done with BJ and his family. I won't do all of those pictures. It was the identical process. Here's the relationship result in CaS.

I saw one thing that is a problem...BJ & Angel are married in NAME only! Look at the BJ's family tree. Bruce is connected to BJ but not Jonna...? Can we fix that? I wonder if I'll have to bring her in & make them marry through the game....??? On second thought....after looking at it more...I think it's just the way that Sims 4 does the family tree. it doesn't have a line to both mother & father like Sims 2 did, huh? It has a line to the red line between the married couple...Sorry for yelling fire in a crowded theatre when it was just a light!

It is at best a very poorly programmed Genealogy in Sims 4. And that's giving it a lot of credit.... :uhhuh:

(as an example - throughout my generational play along with several updates that skewered the works ... I've pretty much had to "piece-meal" any Genealogy together after the Grandparents passed on.... it does not connect the dots to all the family members once any move out, especially.... )

Yes, about the line between. I made sure that Bruce is definitely related as SON, to both Jonna and BJ. If you look at HIS genealogy, you can tell. :uhhuh:

I don't remember how the family trees actually looked in TS2...better, I think, though.

However, it was just about the same thing to get broken families re-related, for different neighborhoods than where they began. That part is due to not being able to put more than 8 families into one household, in any Sims venue. In TS2, when I created the Fostoria neighborhood in TS2 and moved my Fostorias over, with their five kids and spouses, and the children from those unions, I had to get the relationships accomplished in the same manner. The only other way was to use the mod that would allow you to have more Sims in a household. The same thing had to happen in TS3, with Patty's big Amish family. :uhhuh:
