How to Resize Screenshots Using GIMP

Step 1: Download GIMP
Gimp is a powerful free picture manipulation tool that is available from
Download from the website and install as you usually would with any program.
Then open Gimp (the first time may take a while as it loads plugins be patient)

Step 2: Find your image by going to “File” then “Open”

Step 3: Locate and choose your picture
In this example I’ve chosen to open a Sims 3 Image using the following the path below detailed in screenshots.
Please use this method for Sims 3 pictures.
Sims 2 and other images are kept in a slightly different place.
Usually in a game folder called “Storytelling” in “The Sims 2” folder or a specific “Neighbourhood” folder.

Step 4: Resize your image
(If you know how, you may want to crop your image first. If not just continue to follow the steps below)
Step 4a) Click on Image
Step 4b) Click on Scale Image

Step 4c) Click on the Chain Icon to break it
NB This will stop automatic resizing – leave it joined if you wish to keep the picture in proportion

Step 4d) Type in the dimensions that you wish to resize too –
For the example I’ve used 800x600 the max for this forum but you do not have to be that exact.
You may also choose smaller or narrower dimensions than this.
Step 4e) Click on the Chain icon again to seal it and ensure the dimensions you have chosen will be kept
Step 4f) Click on “Scale”

Step 5: Save your image
Step 5a) click on “File” then “Save As…”

Step 5b) Create a folder or use one you already have to store your picture in.
In the example below I created a folder on the Desktop by clicking on “Desktop” then “Create Folder”
Once you have located or created a folder double click into it.

Step 5c) Give your picture a name then click “Save”
Try to refrain from using grammatical marks such as apostrophes as this can cause problems when uploading. You can however use underscores.

Step 5d) Always save at 100% quality for the best view of your picture. Then click on “Save” and you are done!

Next Steps:
Either upload as an attachment on the forum or upload to a photo sharing website such as and copy and paste the IMG code into your new post/reply.

Thank you so much for making this tutorial for Neighborly Sims 3, Kat! It is still a valid tutorial, even though GIMP has gone through a couple of changes that I know of, since you wrote it. The basic functions are still the same.
