This is where you will be introduced to the Sims of Sunflower County and Songbird Hills along with informative notes.

The newspaper : Sunflower County Courier, is published in a separate thread. :yeah:

Additionally each 'major player' Sim or Family Line will have their story shared in threads separate from this one.

Thank You For Visiting!!

INTRODUCING REPORTER/EDITOR FOR THE SUNFLOWER COUNTY COURIER; MISS ROSEY NOSEY

The Sunflower County Courier is located in Songbird Hills. This small news paper currently employs only one roving reporter, Miss Rosey Nosey. Rosey is an open minded, fact collecting journalist. She also serves as the newspaper's editor and pretty much any other staff that publishing requires. Rosey hires the a local cleaner, Maw Kettle, to keep the place tidy and a 'townie' to set up and crank the printing press.

Interesting bits culled from the Sim City Sentinel, local business and want ads are included to fill in space between local and county news (also the ads help financially).

Certain ones see Rosey as a darned nuisance. Others eagerly look forward to her articles and can be counted on to
email or phone in tips.

Something that delights some and upsets others is the fact that Rosie has begun to hire 'Cub Reporters'. These are elementary and high school students with an interest in journalism and photography. Besides being assigned specific tasks the Cubs are encouraged to submit stories of their own.

She's adorable. I've lived in quite a few small towns with small newspapers. You've captured Miss Rosey perfectly for her position!

Thank you, Linda and Melody. Folders with notes and photos are piling up on her desk seeing how I've been filling these up each time I visit the community!! Needed to give a lot of thought to just where to begin and who and what to share first .

From General Store To Small City

When I was born, 15 years ago, Songbird Hills was already a big town, At least to me it seems big even though some call it a small town. We have a sports complex, Sims Broadcasting, the big county hospital a community college, technical-trade school. lots of shops including the old fashioned Hardtt Brothers Department Store and more.

When I interviewed our Mayor, Mr. Melvin Mayor, he told me that technically Songbird Hills is a small city which does not make sense to me. I think that is because I don't yet know very much about government or politics.

There has always been farm fields at the north edge of town where the MacDonald family farm has been ever since the only business was a general store run by the Mayor's parent's (or was it his grandparents?). That was eventually torn down and the Mayor's parents built a small grocery which is now vacant and up for sale.

Back when there was just the general store (oh, yes, and a church ) the area was mostly woods even though you'd not know that to look at it now, The town is still surrounded by woods and some low hills off in the distance.

Some of my friends no longer live here. When the coal mine was ordered shut down after failing too many safety inspections a lot of people suddenly lost their jobs. This was about ten years ago. And then not long after this the lumber mill (also over in nearby Evergreen County) went out of business because of some family dispute. So, even more people no longer had jobs. Our mayor told me that this caused a "domino effect" where over time some small businesses and home businesses closed their doors. Not everyone who no longer had a job left town.

Wesley Kettle and I are in the same Art class (at Sunflower County High) so we talk sometimes and I know that ever since his Paw lost his job at the coal mine his Maw has been working cleaning other people's homes and some business offices. Still, it is sad that some lost their homes to either Sim City Bank or our local Bank (Family Savings & Loan). It's not all bad. A lot of people still have jobs and not everyone is poor or has to live in public housing or had to move somewhere else to find work.

A few years ago the Mayor hired Mr. Smilie to manage "Tourism & Public Relations". Mr. Smilie came up with the idea that Songbird Hills needed to have some country and farm themed attractions and put on some seasonal festivals. So, an old barn and old house were made into a place to have weddings and another old place was made into a pumpkin patch park.

All of this is amazing when I think about how our town started out!

EDITOR NOTE: Photos in this story are available as postal cards at the Town Hall or the Tourist Information (Welcome) Center or at the Bus Depot. :yeah:

I love that you've followed a pattern that has happened so many times in recent years, not to mention the 1930s-era depresseion. The story feels quite personal, because of that. Thanks, Anne!

Thank you, Melody. I'm thinking that Postal Cards will provide a way to share pictures of local landmarks and places of interest. :yeah:

Your are welcome. And thank you Linda and Melody. Your comments are helpful. ;-)

Doing this is wonderful writing and cognitive exercise. So much more interesting (and more fun!) when I can share.

Songbird Hills Officials or The Mayor's Advisors

Postby PattyHeart » August 18th, 2016, 7:03 pm

In Sim City 4 the heads of different public departments are referred to as the Mayor's Advisors. Currently these positions are filled by hired staff of the current Mayor's choosing.

Although the town banker , Bernard Simoleon, is not a staff member the mayor considers him of enough importance to be included in a recent photo shoot for the Songbird Hills Historical Society.

NIEGHBORS

Postby PattyHeart » August 18th, 2016, 7:57 pm

Playable Sims who reside within the 'town limits' are registered separately from those who live in Rural Sunflower County.

This is the current registry for the town. Because the mayor, his staff and the banker have been listed already I will not include them here.
