The Seasons Of Life Challenge RULES & GUIDELINES

THE SEASONS OF LIFE
(Realistic Family Style Game Play)

IMPORTANT!! This challenge is best played using the NRaas Story Progress Mod which replaces the broken EA Story Progression. It is strongly suggested that this mod is used to provide a lively town that will not die out!

PURPOSE: This challenge simulates family life as a whole. While spending time with your family you will be guiding them towards achieving specific goals. Some of these are related to a particular season (Summer, Fall, Winter or Spring) while other goals may be met at any time. Specific goals must be met as a family unit.

You will need to focus on building and maintaining interpersonal relationships while managing finances, home care and upkeep, social activities, education and the overall health and well-being of every household member. As with the seasons in a year one season of life should provide preparation for the next.

Although it may not be immediately evident there are reasons for each and very rule and for every goal.

The challenge ends when all of the Family Life Goals have been met.
There are no points or score keeping.
You will, however, need to do some record keeping to be able to track met and unmet goals and certain financial responsibilities. This is simple, uncomplicated record and book keeping.

Requires:
The SIms 3 Base Game and the Seasons Expansion Pack.
A new, unplayed version of Sunset Valley'

A new unplayed family consisting of;
*Two adult parents and one child (This couple will have just this ONE child)
OR
*Two Young Adult parents and one child (This couple, per the challenge rules, may add to their family ONCE ONLY during the Spring Season)
OR
*Two Adult Parents, one child one teen and one toddler. (If you wish to make things more challenging with a busier, bigger start up family!)

Description: Seasons are set up so that the challenge begins just past mid summer. You will not at the start be playing through a full summer season. After this first summer ends its length is reset to match that of the other 3 seasons.

SETTING UP THE CHALLENGE:

For the purpose of this challenge the number of days in each season and in each sim life stage are adjusted as follows:
Toddler 12
Child 14
Teen 22
Young Adult 22
Adult 22
Elder 20

First Summer Only - 7 Days. After this change to same length as the other 3 seasons;

Fall 22
Winter 22
Spring 22
Summer 22

Note: Some of us (me included) usually refer to Fall as Autumn.

Family Photo Album: Create a new folder outside of the game where the best screenshots of your family can be renamed and sorted out after each game play session.

Your family will move into the Shotgun Style home at 58 Water Lily Lane. All members (including any future spouses or partners) will reside here during this challenge. This will be a multi-generational family household.

Prepare The Home - This is easiest done ahead of moving in and will not raise the cost of the home. Use the Buy or Build Mode Create A Style tool to redecorate the homes ENTIRE existing interior and exterior siding using colors and patterns reflecting the Fall season. (It will soon be fall. After this the décor will be changed each time a new season begins.)

Add any homes or community lots desired to your town. With the story progression Mod it is a good idea to place a second school. To help insure smooth game play please keep your Documents - Electronic Arts - The Sims 3 - Screenshots, DCbackup cleared out. (Rename and move pictures of your family that you wish to keep to a new folder placed in Documents or on your desktop. This will be their Family Photo Album)

Set Up A Family Journal (Optional) - This can kept simple and although a journal is optional it adds more depth to game play and is very useful for story telling. I make little notes in a spiral notebook and then type something up using Notepad. ( I prefer to disable the in game memory album in game because it is not very useful and uses up resources.)

(Late Night, Supernatural, Pets. Future (etc.)If any of these are installed adjust settings so that Supernatural Sims, Pets and Celebrities are not generated. With the Future EP (unless there is a mod to stop him!) the Time Traveler will show up along with a Time Portal. Disable and either delete the portal or place it in the household's Buy Mode Storage.)

FAMILY FUNDS: This challenge is intentionally set up in a way that limits household income from the start. Keep in mind that adding furnishings or décor will mean larger bills to pay. Adding on the optional one bedroom and second bath will also increase bills. Your family will also need to pay for groceries as well as for certain required family outings (such as going to the movie theatre and dining out).

FINANCES & INCOME: For the duration of the challenge (no matter how few or how many generations ) this will be a ONE pay check household limited to ONE part time job held by ONE young adult, adult or elder family member. If a YA or Adult child marries the spouse will give up their job when they move in. Funds they bring in are set aside to be used after the challenge is completed.

To represent the cost of unexpected medical and dental expenses any Sim suffering from Spring Allergies must have a flu jab at the hospital.

Bills that arrive in the mailbox represent taxes and utilities (electric, water and trash pick up.)

EDUCATION & CAREERS: The idea is that the family can not afford a college or university education until after the challenge ends. They therefor do not meet the educational requirements for anything other than part time employment. Family members may, however, take on odd jobs (via chance/opportunity cards) and may sell excess produce and fish.

COLLECTIONS: Family members may collect gems and insects and wildflowers (etc.) ONLY as a non-profit hobby. These items can be displayed, given away or stored in the buy mode Household Inventory carton. (Keep their personal inventory cleared out.) Collecting is not important to this challenge and is considered to be a non-profit hobby.

IN GAME CHALLENGES: Some goal will require accomplishing an in game challenge related to Handiness, Fishing and Cooking.

PAINTINGS AND PHOTOS: May be stored or displayed, but, may not be sold.

SELF EMPLOYMENT: Your family members may not, for the duration of the challenge, use the Ambitions Self Employment option.

TRAVEL: If you have World Adventures, with the exception of elders, your family members may not travel. ONLY ELDERS ARE ALLOWED TO TRAVEL and they are allowed to take grandchildren along on ONE trip only. In other words ONE grandchild may travel with a grandparent ONE time only. (Traveling is not important to this challenge).

SUPER NATURAL SIMS & CELEBRITIES: If your game has the EP's that include these the options in settings must be changed to not allow any Supernatural Sims and to Exempt your household from the celebrity hogwash.

PETS - The only pet allowed is a fish in a fishbowl.

TRANSPORTAION - Family members may each own a bicycle. The household may have ONE car and it must be one of the two cheap ones. (Sloppy Jalopy or Big Lemon)

MEDICAL INSURANCE: To represent medical & dental expenses it is required that every family member (child on up to elder) go to the hospital for a flu shot every fall season. Your family will need to set aside funds for this.

SOCIAL SKILLS: This challenge focuses on family activities and social interactions with the idea of building solid relationships while at the same time forming friendships and connections within the larger community. By the time all of the specified goals are met your family members should be close to one another as well as being a part of the community. Hopefully they will each have developed a variety of skills and interests.

VISITING COMMUNITY LOTS; Individual and Group outings to parks, the public swim pool, gym, museum, library and etc. are important in this challenge.

HOLIDAYS: In the game holidays are generic. However, you may do as you wish in your own game. Keep in mind that this challenge is also about the seasons of the year and our Sim family is "big on holidays'. They will want to enjoy each special season and each special day.

DOING CHORES: Doing and helping with certain household chores as well as gardening will help develop skills. This will also help with meeting certain goals.
