First Snow--November 30, 2015

Postby lindawing » November 30th, 2015, 10:57 pm

I have some first comparison shots of the first snow of the season here in NE South Dakota. The first ones of the pairs were taken about 1:30 PM, and the second ones about 3:30 PM. I need to run and take one more round before dark, because the snow has now thickened and big changes have occurred in the last half hour!!! You can see in some of the 4:00 PM shots, that the wind had started blowing, as well as the snow thickening. The wind has calmed down, now, but the snow is falling even heavier (it's now 4:30 PM).

Here are two pictures David took yesterday. We got about 8" overnight, and it's snowing again, now. The winter weather thing has been extended out to 9 PM tonight. We could get another 5" or so, they say!

Harry was very happy to report that his (junker) car that he bought when we moved out here handles well in the snow, and he was able to get home early this morning with no problems. Hooray!!! That's good, because he works tonight, also, then has two nights off, then back to work until next Wednesday. This should be the only snow this month, though, from what they're forecasting right now.

Well, unfortunately, it's beautiful, but it "bit" Judi today. She needed to go into town to finish setting things up with the three ladies who are going to do the drama part of her Christmas tea at the church. She sponsored the first one last year, and the ladies loved it so much that they asked her to do it again this year. It's not just tea. It's a Bible lesson about the coming of Jesus, straight from her heart.

She ended up telling me all about it, today...after she got back from starting for town, and sliding fairly gently off the road just a mile away...straight into our nearest neighbor's mailbox...sigh.

Thankfully, the van is OK, and Judi, Wesley, and Elizabeth were barely even shaken up. The front window, however, was very nearly shattered all the way through. That replacement will cost us the $250 deductible, plus David will be getting at least two new $100/each tires for the van. We will be replacing the mailbox pole. The old, solid mailbox itself, didn't get damaged.

So...pretty is as pretty does, and the snow may be white, shiny, and beautiful, but it certainly can be dangerous, as well! :-(

I should have updated this! The van's windshield has been replaced and it has also received two new tires. I budgeted for the $250 deductible, but forgot to send a check along with David and Judi on Saturday , so Judi made arrangements to make five $50/month payments to cover that. The repair guy will handle all the rest of the insurance stuff through his regular paperwork submission...easy as pie. David paid for the tires.

Judi says she wants to pay the deductible, but I'm keeping that budget item going until I know the deductible has been paid in full...just in case. ;-)

All of Judi's plans for working out the last of the arrangements for the tea got messed up a couple of times, but on Sunday, all the ladies met and decided that everything has actually been progressing, and that they will meet on Wednesday before the Bible Study, then Thursday evening as well, for finalizing things, and the tea itself is Friday night.

Yesterday, Judi and I found two (official) YouTube videos for the two recorded songs she wants to use during her presentation. They are really great! The other music is already covered with the church's CCLI licensing, and the one lady who is going to sing a special song has bought her sound track, and is licensed to sing along with it, anywhere. So all those technicalities are covered. The little skit that Judi wrote is very short, and the ladies are "on top of it," and Pastor John is providing the voice of God at the end.

All will be well! I just wish I could go!!! :-(

Today is the day of the tea. Judi is pretty exhausted, but it should go well. Please keep her in prayer today, and this evening. Thanks!

Thank you, Melody! The crowd just went out to the van to head back into town after Judi came rushing in to get everyone. She says things have still not been going exactly as planned (do they ever?), but she is OK, and the Lord has really been encouraging her. This is only her second time of teaching the Word, and she didn't expect that anyone would want to hear her teach again, after last year. She has very little confidence in her talents, and teaching is actually one of them!

She still suffers from the disadvantages of having a tracking disability, and even the dyslexia still gives her some problems, though she has basically overcome most of that, as most dyslexics do, given time and experience (I know from my own experience, as well). So when she's up against deadlines and everyone else's expectations, it's a bit hard for her. Every time she gets through it, though, she gains confidence. Hooray!!!

I'm hoping that either David or Harry will get at least a couple of videos of her singing tonight, that I might be able to share. We'll see.

Beautiful pictures! I love the snow. We have some heavy years here but most of the time we have rather mild winters. We are about 3 hours south of the great lakes so do not get the snow effect snow showers like they do in Cleveland. We are in a Valley so we either have years where everything comes in the valley or years where the storms all skirt the valley.
